Pain + Recovery with LED Light Therapy

If your business includes an emphasis on overall well-being, LED light therapy is a simple way to improve your clients’ quality of life while simultaneously growing your retail revenue stream.

The benefits of light therapy for pain and recovery have been widely known and accepted among researchers (including NASA) as well as medical and pain management professionals across the world for decades. In more recent years, consumers ranging from arthritis sufferers to professional athletes have come to rely on the restorative benefits of what is often referred to as “red light therapy.” The reason for this is that light therapy addresses both the source and the sensation of pain in a non-invasive, soothing and relaxing way.

The Source of Pain

It may sound like a stretch to think that light could alleviate pain, but when you stop to consider that light is simply a form of energy (electromagnetic energy) and that the body’s cells require energy for things like maintenance and repair, it all falls into place. When the body’s cells absorb certain wavelength of light, they convert that light-based energy into biological fuel called ATP. As it happens, ATP is a signaling molecule as well as an energy molecule, and when generated via light therapy, several signaling cascades are triggered to alleviate pain. Most importantly, blood circulation is improved, inflammation is reduced, and proteins that help heal damaged tissues are created. Let’s take a quick look at each of these things beginning with improved blood circulation.

Increased Blood Circulation - Studies on light therapy show that one of its many beneficial effects is the release of a molecule called nitric oxide (NO) from cells. NO is an important signaling molecule and vasodilator, which means it dilates or expands blood vessels allowing for increased blood flow and improved microcirculation. Increased blood flow delivers more oxygen, nutrients, growth factors and immune cells to injured or damaged tissues, and this helps accelerate healing which leads to pain relief and faster recovery.

Reduced Inflammation – When certain wavelengths and intensities of light get absorbed by the body, signaling pathways are activated which leads to a reduction in many of the proteins that promote inflammation. Inflammation is reduced, which means there’s less tissue distention or swelling, and this too can help alleviate pain and promote healing.

Generation of Proteins – In studies, light therapy has been shown to trigger an increased expression of proteins, enzymes, and growth factors that help heal tissues. Growth factors generated by light therapy attach themselves to receptors on fibroblast cells, which play a critical role in tissue repair. This results in more fibroblasts and faster healing via the body’s own reparative processes. And once again, healing leads to pain relief and recovery.

The Sensation of Pain

Light therapy has been shown in studies to trigger cell signaling that promotes the release of naturally produced painkillers called endorphins. Endorphins are neurotransmitters or messengers like serotonin, dopamine, and other opioid-containing immune cells that play an important role in sensation by blocking nerve cells that receive pain signals. These messengers migrate to inflamed sites to relieve the sensation of pain, once again using the body’s natural mechanisms to promote relief.

Non-invasive, soothing, and easy to use, light therapy that supports the body’s natural pain relief and healing processes can help you direct your clients to a path of liberation from pain and re-engagement in the activities that make life worth living.
